Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program

As a Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program school, weekly kitchen and garden lessons foster skills-based learning that extends across the entire school curriculum. The children thoroughly enjoy spending structured time in a productive vegetable garden and kitchen as part of their everyday school experience. The garden and kitchen are real-life learning contexts at St Rita’s, interweaving the theories and practices behind growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing meals cooked from healthy, fresh foods.

By becoming a Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program school, St Rita’s has enriched the curriculum by teaching specific skills and knowledge that will last the children a lifetime. We especially acknowledge the learning and development that this program has fostered, and are thrilled at how much the students have enjoyed working with Mrs Jenni Stone to grow and cook their own herbs, vegetables and fruits.

In the words of Stephanie Alexander,

“I believe that education has to be education for life. The children in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program learn how to grow, harvest, prepare and share delicious and wholesome food – experiences that will influence and inform the rest of their lives.”
